Just a month ago, Nikita Haikin appeared to be a strong candidate for Norway’s World Cup squad. The Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper obtained a Norwegian passport, the coaching staff openly discussed his chances of making the World Cup roster, and local media actively covered his anticipated debut for the national team.
However, the story took an unexpected turn. According to NRK, FIFA has not granted Haikin permission to play for Norway. While there has been no official confirmation from the federation, the Norwegian Football Association has acknowledged that they are continuing negotiations with FIFA regarding the goalkeeper’s situation.

In April, the 30-year-old Haikin received Norwegian citizenship. Subsequently, national team head coach Ståle Solbakken confirmed that he considers the Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper a potential candidate for the squad.

But according to NTB and NRK, FIFA has rejected the application. The reason is linked to regulations regarding a change of sports federation. A player over 18 must have resided continuously in the country they wish to represent for at least five years.
Haikin has lived in Bodo since 2019, but briefly left Norway in 2023 to join English club Bristol City. This period is believed to have been the key factor in the application’s review.
“We are continuing our dialogue with FIFA and cannot provide any further comments at this time. We will return with additional information when we are able to share it,” said Norwegian Football Association Communications Director Ragnhild Ask Connell.

Even before the news of the potential rejection emerged, Solbakken had cautiously commented on Haikin’s situation, indicating that the matter remained unresolved.
